Backpacking Hammock

If you want find the best backpacking hammocks then read on. This review will compare the most popular hammocks which are suitable for backpacking. Any hammock "may" be suitable for backpacking but I have only considered those hammocks which are lightweight and more technically suited for backpackers. If you want a hammock for general use in the backyard or camping then please see the review: Best Camping & Backyard Hammocks.

How to Choose the Best Backpacking Hammocks

Hammock Type

There are many different types of hammock available but for backpacking or camping an "open" style of hammock will be the lightest and cheapest style. This is the most basic type of hammock with no attached features such as bug nets, tarps or ridge lines. You can then add a bug net or tarp depending upon the time of year and climate. There are also a number of hammocks "systems" which come with an attached bug net and a tarp. Many of these are true go anywhere "expedition" quality hammocks, such as those supplied by Hennessy Hammocks,  which are at home in the Andes or the Amazon as well as your favorite camping spot.

Hammock length

The length of a hammock depends upon whether it is designed for one person, a single hammock, or for two people, a double hammock. For backpacking the additional weight of a double hammock is not desired. All the hammocks in this review will be single hammocks. Note that the quoted length and width is the "laid flat" dimension of the hammock measured as it is laying flat along the ground. When the hammock is hung the ends of the hammock will be closer than this full length and the side will pull inwards. Some hammocks like those from Hennessy quote a maximum height for their hammocks which is a very useful guide. However, it also depends upon how you want to lie in your hammock and a hammock that is comfortable for one person may be a terrible nights sleep for another person the same size. So like all equipment is it very important that you practice before you head off in the great outdoors.

Hammock Width

The width of the hammock can determine how comfortable a hammock will be for sleeping and if you are a side sleeper then you may want as wide a hammock as possible. However for backpacking to conserve weight you may find that some of these hammocks are on the narrow side.

Hammock Color

Although many of us are happy to have a brightly patterned hammock in our backyard when it comes to backpacking the color choice tends to me more conservative. The majority of the hammocks in this review are more neutrals colors and when it comes to the more technical expedition style hammocks then the color choice tends to be green or brown.

Maximum Weight capacity

The majority of the hammocks in this review are capable of supporting at least 400 lbs. This should provide  safe and secure lounging for most adults and kids. There are some hammocks below this capacity at 200 lbs so please just check the specifications of any hammock to ensure that it is suitable for your intended use.

Disclaimer:  I have never seen a supplier quote the exact test method used to determine the load bearing capacity so please ensure your own safety by getting into your hammock gently and never jump in!

Weight of Hammock

The weight of the hammock should be the major feature for anyone looking for the best backpacking hammock. But bear in mind that if you need a bug-net or a tarp then you need to consider this additional weight when you are comparing open style hammocks to enclosed hammocks.

Hammock Material

Most hammocks are constructed from a parachute type of nylon material which is both light and strong.

Hammock Suspension

You will need some method of attaching your hammock to a pair of trees or other suitable support.  The most common methods include hammock straps, whoopie slings or rope. Some hammocks come with straps and some don't so please check the description of any item to see what it comes with before purchase. Please see the Best Hammock Straps Review for more information.

Carabiners

By far the easiest method of attaching your hammock to the hammock straps are carabiners. This avoids the need to try ANY knots so this is popular with most people except maybe the toughest of ultra light weight backpackers. Some hammock brands like ENO and Kammok come with carabiners and others come with the straps so please check.

Backpacking Hammocks Reviewed

ENO Reactor Hammock

The ENO Reactor is currently the only hammock from ENO which incorporates a double bottom layer to allow a sleeping pad to be secured in a sleeve below the hammock. Unfortunately it is also one of the heaviest hammocks but I have included it this feature due its comfort and features.

Length & Width

The length of the Reactor is 9' 4" and the width is 5' 6". This makes the reactor almost 12" wider than the ENO SingleNest hammock. This is also wider than most other backpacking hammocks but should make for a more comfortable sleep.

Max Capacity

The maximum weight capacity of this hammock is 400 lbs so it should be more than strong enough for most, if not all, campers.

Weight

The weight is quoted as 29 oz. which makes the Reactor quite a bit heavier than the majority of the "open" style hammocks in this review. Partly this is due to the extra width of this hammock which should make for a more comfortable sleep than some of the other more minimal hammocks. But also the Reactor incorporates an extra layer of material under the hammock to allow for a sleeping pad to be inserted. For anyone who has tried to keep a sleeping pad in position while sleeping this feature alone may be worth the additional weight!

Material

All ENO  hammocks are constructed from breathable, quick drying nylon with heavy duty triple stitched seams, the particular fabric for this this model is 70D high tenacity nylon taffeta. This material should give you years of service.

Color

The Reactor is only available in 2 colors which are Navy/Forest and Red/Charcoal.

Straps

This hammock does not come with any straps. There are many suitable straps on the market you can purchase but I suggest sticking with ENO and going for the very light ENO Helios Suspension System. See the hammock strap guide here.

Carabiners

This hammock comes with 7075 aluminum wiregate carabiners.

The length of the Sub7 is 8' 9" and the width is a rather narrow 3' 11". This makes the Sub7  one of the narrowest hammock bodies.

Max Capacity

The maximum weight capacity of this hammock is 300 lbs so it should be more than strong enough for most campers.

Weight

The weight is quoted as 6.5 oz. this is one of the lightest hammocks on the market yet is strong enough to hold a 3oo lb backpacker.

Material

All ENO  hammocks are constructed from breathable, quick drying nylon with heavy duty triple stitched seams, the particular fabric for this model is 30D nylon taffeta ripstop. This material is lighter than the 70D (denier) fabric used on the Reactor model. This material should give years of service if cared for.

Color

The Sub7 is available in 3 colors.

This hammock does not come with any straps. There are many suitable straps on the market you can purchase but I suggest sticking with ENO and going for the very light ENO Helios Suspension System. See the hammock strap guide here.

Length & Width

The length of the JungleNest is 9' 4" and the width is 4' 9". This makes the JungleNest roomy compared with some of its competitors. So this and the fact that it has a 400 lbs capacity may make it a good choice for the larger and heavier camper.

The weight is quoted as 29 oz. this is including the attached bug netting.

The JungleNest is only currently available in grey

The Kammok Wallaby is a single hammock from the respected brand of Kammok of Austin, TX. This brand also supplies a number of hammock accessories.

Length & Width

The maximum weight capacity of this hammock is 400 lbs, this should be sufficient for most campers.

Weight

The weight of the Wallaby is quoted as 10 oz. This is the lightest hammock in this review and certainly makes it very suitable if you want to go backpacking as well as lounge in your yard.

Hennesy Hammock

Hennessy Hammocks (HH) have a LONG tradition of making true expedition quality hammocks. The company was founded by Tom Hennessy who has been designing and making hammocks for 60 years! Their products have been used from the Amazon to the Artic and probably every place in between. Hennessy hammocks can be purchased either with side entry using a quality YYK zipper or bottom entry using a novel velcro system. It is very much a matter of personal choice as to which system people prefer.

Length & Width

HH quote the "bottom fabric dimensions" for this hammock as 10' in length x 4' 11". The dimensions should allow for a very comfortable nights sleep. HH also quote the maximum height of person each hammock is suitable for. This is probably a more appropriate method of sizing a hammock. Best Backpacking Hammock Open Type

ENO Sub 7

There are so many great hammocks now available that it is really hard to pick a single winner and I think that many of the lighter hammocks in this review would serve as great backpacking hammocks if they we paired up with a suitable tarp and mosquito net (if required). But in the end I have decided to select the ENO Sub 7 based mainly on its feather light 6.5 oz weight. That said I would also be happy with the Grand Trunk Nano 7 or the Kammok Wallaby, both would make great backpacking hammocks.

Best Backpacking Hammock Enclosed Type

Hennessy Hammocks Ultralite Backpacker Asym Zip

I have selected the Hennessy Hammocks Ultralite Backpacker as my first pick for an enclosed hammock for backpacking. This hammock comes with everything you need for a hike in the woods to a full scale expedition to the deepest jungle! Tom Hennessy has been developing and sleeping in hammocks all over the world for over 60 years so he probably knows more than most about what makes a good hammock. Hennessy is certainly not the only supplier of enclosed hammocks and their are other great suppliers such as Clark and Warbonnet.
